We always have a soft spot for French-Japanese Cuisine. If you ever wonder how the culinary connection between Japan and France came about or if it it just a recent trend or hype, you might be surprised that their history actually goes way back in 1868.

This gastronomic cultural mixing became more mainstream in 1960s with cross-pollination of ideas as many French chefs went to Japan to study Japanese cuisine, and vice-versa with Japanese chefs. French-Japanese fusion is certainly quite an interesting combination with the core essence of both culinary cultures - their highly-valued heritage, respect for nature and ingredients, and dedication in creating meals that facilitate social bonding - that fuses into that flavourful yet minimalist, delicate taste and intricate plating.

And while we cannot travel to Japan or France now, here we are at the newly opened French-Japanese cafe Aux Bacchanales Singapore, the chain’s first international outlet since its beginning 26 years ago in Tokyo. Aux Bacchanales has a total of 9 outlets in various parts of Japan such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka.

What To Eat?

Seated in the cozy booth of solid mahogany wood and leather seats, lit with a row of overhead hanging orbs oozing the Parisian feel, we ditched our usual buffet high-tea and had a dainty afternoon affair savouring the Galette au Jambon & Champignon with a glass of wine Sauvignon Blanc and a sweet Crepes au Chocolat.

Galette au Jambon & Champignon ($15.80)

As it’s name says in French, is a Ham & Mushroom Crepe which usually comes with a molten egg. The surprise element is the crispy fried enoki mushroom which adds an interesting texture to the cheesy soft buttery crepe.

If you are looking at wine pairing, do pick a Sauvignon Blanc, the dry fruity white will bring out the sweetness of the ham and creaminess of the cheese.

Besides the Galette au Jambon & Champignon, you can also find a good selection of savoury menu like salad (from $9.80), soup ($13.80), mains (in the range of $20-$35), light bites, and sandwiches (from $10.80).

Crepes au Chocolat ($10.80)

Came wrapped with a generous amount of light fluffy whipped cream, the Crepes au Chocolat ($10.80) which translates to Chocolate Crepe is topped with caramelised banana and chocolate ice cream; and with a cute little jar of chocolate sauce, this dessert shouts everything about French-Japanese fusion, it’s elegant yet light and not overly sweet.

Here, you can also find other desserts from tarts, pastries, to sweet crepes (from $7.80) for a little afternoon treat after your retail therapy along the Orchard Road Shopping Belt.
